The UN : credibility : joke

One of the words in that series just doesn't belong. Can you identify which one? Iran can. From a MEMRI dispatch (Iranian Reactions to U.N. Sanctions Resolution 1737) today:
..."In an interview, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, who is in charge of Iran's nuclear dossier, told the Iranian daily Kayhan, which is affiliated with Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, that the sanctions would have no impact on Iran's nuclear program, and would only spur Iran towards its goals: 'Our immediate response to these sanctions is that tomorrow morning, 3,000 centrifuges will begin to operate in Natanz. We are [continuing] our program at full speed... We have already said, on several occasions, that even if the West decides to use the Security Council as a lever [to exert pressure on Iran], this will have no impact whatsoever on our aspirations; on the contrary, we will only become more determined to accomplish our nuclear goals with all possible speed...' "...

Who is taking the UN Security Council seriously anymore? Certainly not Iran and certainly not me.

I'm with you, Dawn. The UN is a bad joke. At worst, it's a corrupt enabler of the worst regimes in the world. At best, it's a corrupt enabler of the worst regimes in the world.

It's clear to me that we've bitten off all the military intervention we can chew right now. But the field is wide open for more effective diplomatic campaigns. Like after 9/11 when State Dept called up Musharaf in Pakistan and growled, "We're sending a whole mess of Marines into Afghanistan. You gotta problem with that? No? Good."

I liked Condi (and Bolton, for that matter) but we could be much tougher. I just pray it doesn't take another domestic attack to make it happen.

Absolutely the UN is a crumbling, corrupt institution. They're liars, they're enablers, they've deteriorated from any semblance of the ideal for which they supposedly stand. I'm for tearing it down and starting from scratch. Of course, I think that applies to anything Condoleeza Rice has touched, too. Not exactly a sterling record there. My glass house will stand so many stones and you can't criticize the UN for being what it is without pointing out that Condoleeza's State Department is out of touch with reality.

Bill, we don't disagree here. Perhaps I should have phrased it differently. I like Rice and Bolton personally, but I'm disappointed with their lack of results.

These days I'm as unhappy with State as I am with the UN. I don't have any love for either one. And that's not just inter-departmental feuding (I'm former DOD INTEL) I think they've done real, lasting harm to the country, both through inaction and scandalous leaks to the press.

Yet another point of consensus between us, Bill! I'm very glad you post comments here -- you help me maintain faith that there can be intelligent discourse between differing political ideologies.

I find it ridiculous to hear people (especially Conservatives) espouse support for any action by the UN these days. Congress and well-meaning Americans often demand that we work with the UN Security Council as if their stamp of approval is meaningful. It's absurd. It's the worst joke in human history at this point. I haven't seen a single American make a dent in that mess -- Dr. Rice included.

The presidential candidate in '08 who endorses a pull-out from the UN will automatically have my vote regardless of party!

Friday Night with Hugh and Friends

The consummate Conservative host, Hugh Hewitt, and yours truly! Shameless of me to post this, I know; however, I'm too jazzed to care. :-p What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night! After an hour or so wandering through some of the exhibits at the Frazier Historical Arms Museum, I then got to spend three hours with Hugh Hewitt and 599 other fans of his show. I absolutely MUST say that not only was Hugh wonderful and the live show very entertaining, but his fans are absolutely the nicest people! I've seen other radio talk show s done live and mingled with fans of those shows. Hugh Hewitt's fans are the nicest, most down to earth, friendly people I've ever met. It's quite a credit to Hugh that he draws such a fan base. If you haven't been to the Frazier Historical Arms Museum here in Louisville, it's a must-see. The museum shows an amazing artistry with the exhibits and places them in the context of the times in a very entertaining and educationa

As the Blog Turns...

Gee. I have found myself fascinated by the soap opera unfolding in the comments section of this blog since last night. One little mention on a controversial Democrat's blog and it's High Noon on ConservaChick! (Yes, I'm laughing while I type this.) For those of you who have no idea what's happening in the ever-expanding comments section , join the club! Here's what I know about Mark Nickolas from bits and pieces I've read on his blog, and from a local news report: Nickolas likes to sneer at Republicans and call them snide little nicknames as he provides his "Unfiltered and Candid Look at Politics, Politicians and the Media in Kentucky;" he raised a ruckus within the Democrat party here in Kentucky by filing a suit against the chairman of the party , Jerry Lundergan; and he will be appearing on the same panel with yours truly on Thursday night. That's about it. You now have the benefit of my not-so-extensive knowledge on this subject. Nickolas poste
