I certainly saw the "free corn" story as a good lesson for people who believe that anything they are given is truly free.

And here, you've construed it to mean that by deregulating the people with the free corn, we have trapped ourselves?! Your premise is then that we are helpless to mitigate our own desire for free corn? We are slaves to the word "free?" Somehow government regulations can protect us from our wanton desire for freebies?

Deregulation puts the onus on the buyer to educate himself and to beware of something that seems too good to be true. That's as it should be. No matter how much the government tries to protect people from themselves, the responsibility for his well being still lies with each individual.

Anonymous 8/31 11:02AM, thanks for correcting my mistaken attribution on that quote. Indeed it was Ford who never seems to get credit for anything. ;o)

Michael, thanks for your concern; however, I can assure you that I'm living in a universe where reason still marginally rules. Only a Liberal would assume that because other industrialized nations are have universal healthcare, it is the right thing to do.

You dropped acid in college and never quite came back from the bad trip, huh? After all, the seniors at the frat house were doing it...Rena Bernardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10231776035703054588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8596852.post-80370286771676848102008-09-08T09:46:00.000-04:002008-09-08T09:46:00.000-04:00Disillusioned with liberal GOP?? Maybe you ought to ask Phil Gramm why people in the US are “whining”.

In 1999, Gramm successfully undid the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act, removing the decades-old “fire-wall” between commercial banking, which was heavily regulated, and investment banking, which was not.

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act did not extend significant new goverment regulation to investment banking.

And so… today, because of this piece of bad legislation that heavily favors the banking industry, we are left with what has become known as the “Housing Crisis”.

And what company employed Gramm after his tenure in congress? Why he became a lobbyist for UBS (Swiss Bank), of course!!!

If you listen very carefully, you can hear the banking community laughing at you for the gate has swung shut and you are already trapped inside.

We need MORE goverment regulation, not LESS!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8596852.post-59651848653989352702008-08-11T23:07:00.000-04:002008-08-11T23:07:00.000-04:00The truthfulness of this story will become painful...The truthfulness of this story will become painfully apparent if the economy really does take a turn for the worse.

Whiner Nation isn't ready for hard times.David Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16493753989438380933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8596852.post-35400416214157282712008-08-10T09:38:00.000-04:002008-08-10T09:38:00.000-04:00hey, I totally agree with you.hey, I totally agree with you.Laura Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08356509241377448787noreply@blogger.com
