I have always admired Newt Gingrich. He is a gentleman and a scholar and certainly one of the most entertaining and insightful historians of our generation. So, when I saw this article on NewsMax, I took what he had to say as the definitive word on where we, as a world, stand today with regard to war in the Middle East. I could not possibly agree more.
So then, the question becomes: what are we to do about it? At this point, I think the United States would be well-advised to gather free nations together to draft a treaty to annihilate Islamo-fascism (or "terrorism" if you prefer). Nations who want to continue to live free -- or, for that matter, BEGIN to live free -- without the threat of random and senseless violence perpetrated against them by the likes of Hezbollah, Hamas, North Korea, Iran, and other terrorist organizations.
Such a treaty would have at the heart of it an agreement to "clean house" within each signatory's own national boundaries first. This means each country would agree to squash existing known Islamo-fascist terrorist organizations within its own borders; provide no safe haven or safe transport to known terrorist organizations; stop the flow of terrorist funds through their countries (c'mon Swiss, time to take sides); and come to the aid, as needed, of other countries who are in the grips of an Islamo-fascist/terrorist movement.
We all ready have allies in the fight against Islamo-fascists ("coalition of the willing") at work beside us in Iraq and Afghanistan today: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, United Kingdom, and Ukraine. We've received funds from Japan and small troop contingents from other smaller nations such as Tonga during our efforts to date. They seem likely to be ready signatories to such a treaty since they have committed time, talent, and treasure to this fight from the beginning. And, as the North Korean threat continues to develop we might just find China ready to talk turkey if there are commerical costs and rewards associated with it.
Wouldn't Arabic countries such as Egypt, Jordan, and Turkey be under some pressure to sign such a treaty knowing that they would only aid themselves by signing on for assistance, if needed, should such factions as Hezbollah try to take root in their countries? Should Russia sign on to this, they would then be free to help the smaller countries in the Balkans eradicate the terrorist organizations there without worrying about world condemnation.
And how about Saudia Arabia finally giving in to international pressure to stop their Islamo-fascist ways within their own country? Seems to me that they might feel a little peer pressure from their commercial allies to join such a treaty. Russia stands to gain quite a lot by signing such a treaty and having more of its own oil purchased worldwide if Saudia Arabia declines. Provided one of those two countries declines to sign such a treaty, it sure seems like an awful good deal for the one who does sign, doesn't it? Money talks. A volatile country with terrorist issues is less likely to be economically attractive to outside interests.
Unless you're a Liberal who has not yet had a lobotomy, it takes no brain surgeon to understand that Israel has been long in need of a more complete response to the terrorist threats they have lived under on a daily basis for decades -- even after having made concrete moves toward peace recently. They, of all nations, deserve help from other countries who are ready to end the bloodshed in the Middle East so we can all rest easier in the long run.
Look, maybe it was a good idea at the time, but the United Nations is a colossal failure. Resolution after resolution was adopted all along the way in our own war against Islamo-fascism and none have had any teeth other than those supplied by the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and our other partners in the current coalition.
I suppose such a treaty might squelch other types of less militant movements not associated with Islamo-fascism but it would certainly eliminate the majority of the real threats we face today. It would also send a signal to all people worldwide that terrorism will not be tolerated. The world community would understand that change must come through political process, not through terrorist tactics. Engage in such tactics at your own risk. Seems like a very strong message to me.
I'm willing to concede that some of the Liberals might just have it right: the current situation could possibly be creating more terrorists and for every one militant Islamo-fascist who dies doing a homicide bombing or as a result of a military assault by our current coalition, there are more waiting to take his place. If we manage to kill some cockroaches in one part of the house (Afghanistan and Iraq), why allow them to scurry elsewhere to hide out until the threat of extinction evaporates? It seems to me that a new worldwide alliance is in order -- the U.N. has been allowed to fail time and time again and, at this point, there seems to be no accountability.
It's just a thought but I think it's a worthy one. I can't believe it's not being discussed...
