Site Recommendations?

I've recently noticed a number of visitors coming from ".mil" domains. I try to support the military in as many ways as possible (blogging, donating, writing to service members, and counter-protesting with Protest Warrior). I usually research the links I provide and sites I mention on my blog. The best research ever on these types of sites would be recommendations from service members. If any of you have suggestions for good military information websites, sites of organizations that support our troops, or good military blogs I'd sure appreciate the info.

Thank you for your service to our country and thanks in advance for any info you can send my way!

Dawn,

Thanks for a running a great blog. I'm an active duty US Navy E-9 with USS RONALD REAGAN's Carrier Air Wing.

Here are some links of interest to my brothers and sisters in the services, and also you great Americans that work so hard supporting us, freedom and America..

DefenseLink has a pretty comprehensive listing of organizations that provide support and services to the troops.

http://www.defenselink.mil/americasupportsyou/support/help.html

When people in the community ask me how they can help servicemembers, or how they can write to service members, I often refer them to this page.

The Defense "Early Bird" is my daily news digest of choice at:

http://ebird.afis.osd.mil/ or their mirror at http://ebird.dodmedia.osd.mil/

Unfortunately, for many of you good folks, the Early Bird can only be accessed from .mil domains.

Finally, and off the subject, I want to give a "shout out" to Jakob Dylan and his band "The Wallflowers". When I was deployed on the USS JOHN C. STENNIS last summer and fall, The Wallflowers asked if they could fly out to the carrier to put on a show for the Sailors. They brought no press, no label execs, video crews, or other extra baggage to exploit or self-aggrandize their trip. When they arrived, they hung out with the troops, visited fans, ate meals with the crew and then put on a terrific show. They were all really nice people that were very supportive of the Sailors. There was no press coverage and the whole event was pretty much "under the radar". Plus, They rocked! So, thanks Wallflowers.
Thanks for all you do,
Master Chief

Thank you very much, Master Chief. I sure appreciate your support. Thanks for the tips on sites. I'll add them to the blogroll here.

And, may I just say that in this girl's humble opinion, you are with the best-named carrier in the US Navy. I cried for days when The Great Communicator passed away. God bless him! Even as I type this, I'm sitting facing my Reagan Ranch calendar. I sure miss his style and plain-speaking.

Great story about Jakob Dylan! I have always liked The Wallflowers. There is something about them that stands out from other bands. I guess now we all know what it is... humility! What a great story. Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you for your service, Master Chief! God speed and keep His hand upon you and your sailors as you protect this great nation!

Is conscription the prescription?

US Representative, Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is at it again. Rangel's prescription for fixing the ills we're feeling in Iraq is a draft . I have very mixed feelings about this. Conscription is conscription no matter what you choose to label it. Is that appropriate in a free country? On the flip side of this coin, I've often thought that compulsory national service would be a great idea for American kids right out of high school. It might have been a better start for me than learning to down beer at a Liberal Arts university! Two years in the service might give kids time to think about their future, learn higher levels of responsibility, and begin to take life more seriously. There are many countries who require some level of mandatory military service: Belarus, Chile, China, Croatia, Serbia, Russia, Iran, Lebanon, our neighbor Mexico, and our old buddy Germany, to name a few. Gee, now that I look at that partial list... aren't many of those countries Socialist or at battl...

As the Blog Turns...

Gee. I have found myself fascinated by the soap opera unfolding in the comments section of this blog since last night. One little mention on a controversial Democrat's blog and it's High Noon on ConservaChick! (Yes, I'm laughing while I type this.) For those of you who have no idea what's happening in the ever-expanding comments section , join the club! Here's what I know about Mark Nickolas from bits and pieces I've read on his blog, and from a local news report: Nickolas likes to sneer at Republicans and call them snide little nicknames as he provides his "Unfiltered and Candid Look at Politics, Politicians and the Media in Kentucky;" he raised a ruckus within the Democrat party here in Kentucky by filing a suit against the chairman of the party , Jerry Lundergan; and he will be appearing on the same panel with yours truly on Thursday night. That's about it. You now have the benefit of my not-so-extensive knowledge on this subject. Nickolas poste...

Three Things No One Else Is Telling You

Our bureaucratic overlords maintain that streets signs must contain both upper and lower case letters, instead of just capital letters! Do you feel grateful that you're being protected from upper case streets signs? This dictatorial mandate comes from the Federal Highway Administration, and applies to every community in America, not just New York City. But don't blame this outrage on the busy-body Democrats. This isn't an Obama directive. The rule was actually promulgated back in 2003 -- during the Bush Administrat...
