I'm quite a bit later on this than I would have preferred but I have a little something to say about the way our Senators from Kentucky voted on the Flag Burning Amendment.
Mitch McConnell: A "nay" vote?! Senator, have you lost your freakin' mind? I've been watching your votes lately and I would swear that you have become a pod person inhabited by a Liberal alien. Sir, I would ask that you hold the symbol of our great country sacred as do many of your Conservative constituents here in Kentucky. For purposes of "freedom of speech," America-haters are welcome to bury Uncle Sam in effigy but NOT our flag.
Jim Bunning: A well-considered "yea" vote was most welcome and this Kentucky Conservative appreciates the respect you have shown our flag with your vote. You had a tough battle during your re-election campaign here but you have proven time and time again via your votes in Congress that we certainly did the right thing by re-electing you. You have shown more concern for your constituents than has your fellow Senator from Kentucky. I deeply appreciate your efforts.

I can think of no good reason to burn the flag. But I can think of no good reason to ban the practice, either. In the end, I come down on the side of non-restriction. Besides, the fire and smoke allow one to spot America-hating ingrates from a greater distance.
Keep it legal I say.
I guess I just want ONE thing in this country to be sacred and respected for a change. In my lifetime so far, I've watched so many things that used to command respect (like the flag, the national anthem, the traditional roles of mothers and fathers, the Presidency, etc.) trashed and thrashed by the Liberal Left. It leaves me sick with nostalgia for the time when Americans were civil and showed respect for some things other than themselves.
I guess I could support the burning of the flag only for the reason you cited: spotting "America-hating ingrates from a distance" would make it a little more palatable!! ;o)
I was once told that I'm just Right of Fascist... maybe that's true after all! LOL
I suppose the freedom to burn the American flag stands and so does my freedom to burn the UN flag. hehehe
