Governor Fletcher has seen his support from Kentucky GOP organizations wither away recently. All this over his handling of the "hiring probe." Let's face it, he handled it very poorly. I don't fault him completely for that -- he was given some VERY bad advice by someone; unfortunately, he took that bad advice and it left egg on his face (and ours).
I worked very hard for Governor Fletcher when he ran against Democrat Ben Chandler in '04. I was excited about his election because I felt it meant the end of the "good old boy network" in state government -- the same Good Old Boys who have held this state back for three decades. Unfortunately, it seems Fletcher felt he could play the same old politics as the Dems when he took office and I'll never, for the life of me, figure out why he wasn't more alert to the enemies he was amongst in Frankfort.
Enough of that. If Governor Fletcher's support is truly eroding -- which, for the record, I find disgusting -- then it's because the Republicans in this state are more worried about polls and appearances than they ought to be. This governor has given us some new economic hope and worked hard to make progress that will move this state forward should he be re-elected. I frankly find the "fair weather" Republicans in this state disgusting.
With a "fair weather" team like this behind him, I can see how Governor Fletcher will struggle for re-election. We ought to be smarter than this. If we can't get behind Ernie for re-election then we ought to be begging Lt. Governor Steve Pence to run. He's a man of integrity and one of the most humble and honest public servants I've ever met. He has distanced himself, rightly so, from the political debacle brought on by some in the Fletcher administration and might stand a great chance of succeeding against a Democrat opponent.
