...you've certainly earned it! I'm going to miss the loveable yet surly and sardonic Donald Rumsfeld! Say what you will about him but he was the best at no-nonsense conferences. Granted, he might have prosecuted our war against the Islamo-fascists a bit differently but some of our troops respected him:

Every time the world evolves into something that obviates a new kind of warfare, it's called a "revolution in military affairs." It doesn't happen very often, sometimes hundreds of years apart. Don Rumsfeld understood that now (with the end of the Cold War and increased non-state terrorism) is one of those times.
He's done an amazing job dragging the Pentagon (often kicking and screaming) into the 21st Century. Joint Force Doctrine? All Rumsfeld. This is how we took Baghdad in just 21 days with minimum casualties. Our boys in Operation Enduring Freedom set world records in Afghanistan. Our average, over-land deployment speed, from the beach to the enemy (over mountains! Eat yer heart out Hannibal!) was over 50 MPH. (WWII average, 2.5 MPH) Again, all Rumsfeld.
While, in a sense, it's true that Rumsfeld "owns" our mistakes as well as these sucesses, I'm afraid that his replacement (a realist from the Cold War? Hello! We're going backward, here!) won't be able to finish the good work Don started.
In fact, I'm not just afraid, I'm petrified. Gates has got some big shoes to fill.

It is truly nice to meet a Democrat who likes Rumsfeld, Anon. Unfortunately, I've been in the company of way too many Liberals who abhor him that I forget there are still some of us who can admire people without letting our party affiliation get in the way of our integrity. Nice!
