Most of us are familiar with Chuckie Schumer (D-NY). Unfortunately, we're familiar with him because he's well known for being a grandstander. The guy annoys the beejeezus outta me.
So, who exposed Schumer's hypocrisy this time? Shockingly enough, it was Don Imus, talk show host on MSNBC, with regard to the current situation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Schumer took an absolute grilling from Imus on his show (as have McCain and Lieberman, I should add).

Let's be clear on one thing, Imus is against this war; however, he has done wonderful things in support of our troops through his involvement with the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. If there is any one person in the United States who can actually get away with saying he "supports the troops" while not supporting their mission, it's probably Imus.
Nice work on holding Senators accountable for their responsibilities to our veterans, Imus!

Radio host Don Imus on Friday took an obviously flustered Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to task for never bothering up to visit wounded soldiers at the military's Walter Reed Hospital. While Schumer was quick to blast the Bush administration for failing to maintain facilities for wounded military personnel at Walter Reed, he was apparently surprised when Imus began questioning him about his own dealings with Walter Reed.

Imus has helped raise money for soldiers and their families -- he doesn't just give "support the troops" lip service, he actually uses his time to help them in ways that matter. For the record, I've never been a fan of Don Imus. I found his radio show annoying at best; however, after reading what he's done for our troops and their families regardless of his opinion of their "mission," I think much more of him.
It is my opinion that many in this country throw around the phrase "support the troops" whether verbally or on car magnets but don't bother to DO anything that actually shows their support for these brave men and women and their families.
Let me be clear about this: This hollow sentiment exists outside of whether a person is a political Conservative or a political Liberal. It's a lazy American attitude -- more concerned with the next luxury purchase than with the battle being waged to protect this country and our freedoms.
This is what makes the whole "support" thing ring hollow, in my opinion. I get tired of it. I was pleased to see someone who was against going into Iraq drop his need to be right in favor of his need to actually support the troops regardless of their mission.
When the Left in this country began saying, "We support the troops," they were quietly (blatantly in some cases) adding "but not the mission." In my mind, Anon, you cannot support the men and women fighting this war without supporting them all the way to victory.
Our troops are not kids who've fallen off their tricycles and must come home now... they are adult volunteer professionals who, despite all the coverage otherwise, are doing great things in Iraq. This war must be won for all Americans but most especially for these fine men and women who, I'm sure, would like to come home victorious knowing that they made a difference and that they and their compatriots will not have sacrificed in vain.
