I've been very involved in local politics since I helped elect Governor Fletcher last year. He is Kentucky's first Republican Governor in 36 years! It was an awesome experience and got me hooked on working as a volunteer on political campaigns whenever I can.
This year I've been volunteering lots of time and effort to the Bush/Cheney and Northup campaigns. Last Saturday, I spent 8 hours driving a van full of 12 "walkers" to neighborhoods in our area as part of the GOP's Get Out the Vote campaign. Those precinct walkers had their work cut out for them as the houses in our precincts were fairly spread out. However, many of them were shocked to be thanked for their effort by the voters they connected with during the day. One retired veteran thanked us for OUR service to the country! We were all in awe. We had numerous voters report that their Bush/Cheney '04 signs had been stolen. The best we could offer them were some small campaign stickers instead. Many of the walkers I worked with were 21 and under. There was a registered Democrat and a registered Independent walking with us -- they were inspirational to all the voters and the volunteers they touched during the walk that day. Many were tired at the end of the day but all of us had smiles on our faces on the drive back to the Victory '04 office. We know we made a difference in this election.
At a rally this evening for Senator Bunning, I was told by one of the volunteers that a van of precinct walkers today came upon a Kerry minion stealing a Bunning sign from the yard of one of the houses on their walk list. That guy was shocked to see a good number of our volunteers pouring out of the van, running in his direction yelling "put that back!" hehehe Fortunately, we Conservatives are polite and didn't pummel him. He was obviously already senseless so I'm sure they assumed pummeling would only vegetate him completely. ;-)
Tomorrow promises to be a very full day as I'm working the polls down in the West end of town. I'm already a bit nervous as I'm not sure what type of shenanigans to expect. We had one or two on the "other side" last election... I'll say my prayers tonight and add a request for a fair election to the standard fare. I'm hoping that when my job there is done, I'll get to the victory party in time to hear all of the winners' victory speeches!
Good luck tomorrow to GOP candidates all across the fruited plain, especially Senator Bunning, Congresswoman Northup, and President George W. Bush!
