Protest Warrior took to the streets downtown today to counter-protest the lunkhead leftists from LPAC as they protested the use of military aircraft in the airshow today on the waterfront. Despite the wind and the cold, today's mission was probably one of our most successful to date, thanks to a press release and a wonderful statement crafted by one of our talented members (also a FReeper), Robert. For a full and very entertaining description of today's events that includes some great photography, please check out the blog of one of our other talented members, Paul.
Among our chosen weapons for the mission today were Old Glory flying high and proud in the wind, all of the military services' songs (with a few other great tunes) cranked up to full volume, and a new batch of clever signs cooked up by our Leader, Brandon. Oh, and of course, the broad smiles that always paint our faces on these missions. I was proud to be there today and prouder than ever of the die-hard Protest Warriors!
Protest Warrior was seen on the 6pm and the 11pm newscasts on WHAS-11 television. Not only were we seen, we were finally heard! Robert read our statement to the press and the sound byte selected for the broadcast was perfect: "They [LPAC] claim the aircraft used today are 'weapons of mass destruction.' However, the truth is they are implements of liberation and the defenders of freedom."
We may be mentioned in the Courier-Journal tomorrow but expect that write-up to be very slanted and inaccurate, as usual. UPDATE: We are mentioned in the C-J article about the protest. Unbelievably objective and accurate as well. Thanks for your objective journalism, Gregory Hall of the C-J -- you are a credit to your profession.
Robert has posted a recap of the mission on the Free Republic forum. Two of us in attendance are FReepers as well as Protest Warriors. We were joined by another FReeper from Lexington and it was great having "Skink" aboard. We made a few other new friends today (as usual) in veterans who saw us and came by to say thanks for our support. As Paul said so well in his blog entry, it's always so humbling to hear words like that from veterans to whom we owe so very much.
I'm still chuckling about another anonymous new compatriot who graced the mission today. He decided to make his own statement about LPAC's America-hating messages. He's the gent on the Harley in the picture on Paul's blog and in the picture on the Courier-Journal article. We all got quite a chuckle out of his "statement!" UPDATE: No longer anonymous, the vet's name is Tom Amshoff of J-town. Way to freakin' go, Tom! Thanks for making your statement, my friend. You have some new admirers. ;-)
There were quite a few priceless moments during today's mission but one that I'm still grinning about was the sight and sound of the F-15 Eagle that flew directly down 4th Street to the river during LPAC's little protest. They looked like such sad sacks and the rest of us jumped up and down and cheered. As soon as we could be heard across the street by the old hippies we yelled "Now, that's the sound of freedom!" It certainly made all of us feel really great about being out there today supporting the fine men and women in our armed forces.
Mission accomplished; well done, Warriors!!
