Eeeek -- Diversity Class!

Oh boy. I knew that going back to college was going to be a shock to my system. Without any pretense of being anything other than a class on the oppressed and the oppressors, I am taking a class called "Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class."

Allow me to present you with the definition of a "minority group" (quoting almost entirely from the textbook):

"A minority group can be quite large and can even be a numerical majority of the population... Minority status has more to do with distribution of resources and power than with simple numbers..."

A minority group has five characteristics:

1. The members of the group experience a pattern of disadvantage or inequality.
2. The members of the group share a visible trait or characteristic that differentiates them from other groups.
3. The minority group is a self-conscious social unit.
4. Membership in the group is usually determined at birth.
5. Members tend to marry within the group.

It is important to define and characterize minority groups so that society can help equalize the group's access to jobs, education, wealth, health care, and housing with that of the dominant group.

I've got to tell you that this class is already pushing all my buttons; I'll be lucky to curb my right thinking ways in order to get a good grade. I'm maintaining a 4.0 GPA at this point after four classes. Don't want to blow it but SHEEESH!

Sheesh.... I dunno if I'd be able to "curb" my voice, let alone my thinking. As if we would want to curb our right thinking. :-)

It's your grade, of course, so do whatever you feel necessary. But I gotta tell ya, I don't envy your position. One look at the U of L required course list and I went with Real Estate school! Good luck!

UofL has gotten worse over the past view years. I remember when they started requiring some of the more "questionable classes" and was just thankful I had already finished all my gen ed requirements for speed school

Well! After reading the definitions here, I believe that makes me an "Appalachian American".
Now, where's my midnight basketball court? And no cracks about definition point number 5 or I'll see you in court with my brother/nephew/son-in-law the lawyer!

How wacko ! What's the textbook you're citing from ? I'm glad I'm past the "higher education" thing. I'd be having heart attacks every two minutes with stuff like that.

Mark, I'll probably have to curb my "voice" somewhat to get the A that I want to maintain across all my classes but I promise to stand steadfast with my right thinking for sure. At least I get to share it here!

Kad and ShortDaddy, you'll be surprised to know that in the world of "college online" (aka, University of Phoenix) most of the students seem to profess some very strong Conservative values. I was flabbergasted at the number of "thank you for your service to our country" and "you're in my prayers" comments that hit the chatroom and some of the assignments. It seems we Conservatives have excused ourselves from the socialist classrooms and found our way into what is fast becoming the true stomping grounds of Conservatives -- the internet. I'm pleased so far. Although, one of my next classes is "Environmental Science." Guaranteed to be some mythology on Global Warming there, don't you think? ;-) Evidently for a BS in Computer Science, you have to wade through some "BS" Liberal Arts (and I do mean LIBERAL) classes!

Master Chief, I am a "Celtic/Hillbilly American" my danged self. I won't make any cracks about point #5 if y'all don't!

El Jefe, the textbook is "Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class" (Third Edition) by Joseph F. Healey. I highly recommend it for raising blood-pressure and/or guilt-tripping for we non-slave-owning white immigrant descendants about the disgrace of slavery in America in which we played no part... GRRR.

I'll be posting more on this class for sure. Chapter 2 on Assimilation and Pluralism is already raising my hackles and I'm only on the first page of that chapter!

Louisville Tea Party -- July 4, 2009

Help us make it known to Comrade Obama and his goons on Capitol Hill that July 4th is INdependence Day , not COdependence day! Louisville's patriots are throwing a TEA Party on Saturday, July 4th in Jefferson Square (6th and Jefferson) from 11am - 2pm. Hope to see you there!!

Friday Night with Hugh and Friends

The consummate Conservative host, Hugh Hewitt, and yours truly! Shameless of me to post this, I know; however, I'm too jazzed to care. :-p What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night! After an hour or so wandering through some of the exhibits at the Frazier Historical Arms Museum, I then got to spend three hours with Hugh Hewitt and 599 other fans of his show. I absolutely MUST say that not only was Hugh wonderful and the live show very entertaining, but his fans are absolutely the nicest people! I've seen other radio talk show s done live and mingled with fans of those shows. Hugh Hewitt's fans are the nicest, most down to earth, friendly people I've ever met. It's quite a credit to Hugh that he draws such a fan base. If you haven't been to the Frazier Historical Arms Museum here in Louisville, it's a must-see. The museum shows an amazing artistry with the exhibits and places them in the context of the times in a very entertaining and educationa

As the Blog Turns...

Gee. I have found myself fascinated by the soap opera unfolding in the comments section of this blog since last night. One little mention on a controversial Democrat's blog and it's High Noon on ConservaChick! (Yes, I'm laughing while I type this.) For those of you who have no idea what's happening in the ever-expanding comments section , join the club! Here's what I know about Mark Nickolas from bits and pieces I've read on his blog, and from a local news report: Nickolas likes to sneer at Republicans and call them snide little nicknames as he provides his "Unfiltered and Candid Look at Politics, Politicians and the Media in Kentucky;" he raised a ruckus within the Democrat party here in Kentucky by filing a suit against the chairman of the party , Jerry Lundergan; and he will be appearing on the same panel with yours truly on Thursday night. That's about it. You now have the benefit of my not-so-extensive knowledge on this subject. Nickolas poste
