While outside taking a well-deserved break today, I happened to take notice of a small caterpillar who seemed on a mission.
The caterpillar approached the brick side of the building and raised up to consider the climb. All his little legs kicked into motion and, much to my surprise, he began to climb the brick. What he saw up there that enticed him, I'll never know.
He seemed determined to make the climb though. As his legs hit some of the bricks that had maintained a more shiny surface, he slipped and the upper part of him flipped backward a bit. He stopped, adjusted his approach and tried again. Slipped backward again. Even with all those little legs working for him, the brick surfaces sometimes worked against him. Each time, he would adjust his approach and climb a little to the left or right of the surface. Sometimes, he simply chose to follow the path of the mortar and zig-zag a little.
This went on for some time when he eventually lost his grip on the bricks completely. The caterpillar tumbled about a foot and landed *thunk* back on the ground in just about the same place where his climb began.
I watched, fascinated that he had tried so hard and ended up where he started. I was astonished to see him shake it off and begin the climb again!
It still amazes me that some of the finer truths in life are illustrated all around us on a daily basis. They are ingrained in nature and her creatures. This caterpillar didn't need a motivational speaker, a therapist, a good friend, a family member, or a doctor to tell him that if he wanted to get where he was going, he was just going to have to keep adjusting and keep climbing even if he ended up back on the ground. Amazing.
Maybe I'm just a bit simple but I found this one little observation worthy of note.
