Our friend Russ Vaughn has recommended a thoughtful piece about our military men and women that reminds us to honor, not pity, them.
The media and anti-American types have been on a campaign over the past few years to portray our military men and women as mindless fodder in the war against Islamofascism, mindless fodder who return home as victims of the American "war machine." For the vast majority of our troops, this is just completely untrue.
The best part of this piece is a Marine Lt. Col's explanation for why anti-military/anti-American throwbacks to the Vietnam years insist on hollowly mouthing "we support the troops" while continuing to portray them as victims and misfits:
The military type as misfit "is a stereotype that a lot of people from the Vietnam era have held on to." Then, as now, "they saw men and women who did more than they did . . . and they'd compensate by casting those folks in an inferior status."
Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to honor servicemembers in whatever way you can. This piece suggests a few ways to do something practical and meaningful for military personnel and their families. We all have a part to play in maintaining our freedom and supporting our victors; let's do it, shall we?
Thanks for the recommendation, Russ!
