Kentucky Club for Growth

I joined the Club for Growth a few years ago because of their national, non-partisan, action-oriented focus on one of the most important issues to me -- free market economics.

I've always been a fan of Ayn Rand. Her book "Atlas Shrugged" made a huge amount of sense to me and is a weighty -- at over 1,000 pages, quite literally -- warning that the government cannot (or should not) control free enterprise unless they wish to penalize the providers in this country. Without them, we're all jobless and penniless.

Without the currency to do the things we dream, we can only dream. Economics and a healthy economy are crucial to this nation. Too many politicians are still under the impression that enterprises can be "commanded" to raise wages and hire people when it makes no business sense to do so. With the Dems being newly elected to the majority on Capitol Hill, the "nanny state" sense of entitlement will do nothing but blossom. I dread the economic effect this will have on our country if left unchecked.

Therefore, as you can well imagine, I was pleased to see this announcement in my e-mail today:

Kentucky Club for Growth Launches

Nov 13, 2006 - Many have said that "conservatives" were defeated on Tuesday. We say that is not true; it is the Republican Party that was defeated. Sadly, many members of the GOP have abandoned the principles that guided Ronald Reagan, culminating last week in major Republican losses in both the U.S. Congress, as well as the Kentucky General Assembly.

Fortunately, the national Club for Growth fared far better in elections, winning 7 of 8 races in which they endorsed a candidate in the primary and followed through the general. They did so by finding and supporting candidates who believe that big government is bad government. We couldn't agree more!

Who are we?
The Kentucky Club for Growth, a chapter of the national organization, is a group of citizens dedicated to expanding prosperity for working families through the Reagan doctrine of lower taxes, smaller government and strong free enterprise.

Why is the Kentucky Club for Growth needed?
The size and cost of government is going up, not down both nationally and here in the Commonwealth. It is time that conservatives gain control of government and demand fiscal discipline.

What will the Kentucky Club for Growth do?
The Kentucky Club for Growth will find, support and endorse candidates for elected office who are committed to free-market principles, lowering taxes, reducing spending and decreasing the size of government. Additionally, we will hold Frankfort accountable by monitoring legislation and providing scorecards to our members and the press after each legislative session.

Gaahhh - Another extension of the awful US Chamber of Commerce. As Pat Buchanan says "The GOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of the US Chamber of Commerce". I'm not willing to trade government running my life for unregulated business. Non-partisan...ha...give me a break! Also, it's amazing to see so many neo-cons morphing over the last few months into "Reagan conservatives". Want an example? Sean Hannity. After beating the neo-con drum for years he's suddenly a libertarian and a Reagan conservative.

Interesting that you chose to deride the group without doing any investigation of the candidates they endorse and why. I shouldn't be surprised.

Let me guess: you don't work in the private sector, do you? Academe or government office of some sort? Never owned a business of your own and felt the pain of having to lay off workers because you could no longer afford the cost of their employment? Never faced the IRS when tax time came and, even though you made a living equal to poverty level, still had to pay Uncle Sam money he didn't earn while sitting on your back the whole time you tried to earn it?

Gaahh, indeed!

Thanks for the posting Dawn.

We the members, you included, of Club for Growth will be kicking RINOs asses and taking names very soon.

Stay tuned.

BTW, chill out a bit on anon10:30am.

He is mostly correct in his assesment of the C of C.

They write the play book for the RINOs in this state.

The Chamber has brought the GOP to the edge of corruption as much as interest group that I know.

Anon is also right about all of the deathbed conversions to Reaganism all of the sudden.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your response, Una. I was a bit harsh because I tire very quickly of the "business as embodiment of evil" nonsense. Short tempered today, I guess. I'm sure I have a lot more to learn about GOP politics in the state of Kentucky. I was absent from the state for 18 years and have missed much. I certainly hope the Kentucky chapter of Club for Growth will be a good vehicle to help me catch up.

As for Republicans claiming to be Reaganites now, I don't really follow the GOP "celebrity declarations" much. I met Hannity in person once and found him to be a very likeable person; however, I don't like his brand of political debate. If he and other "celebs" claim to be Reaganites now, it makes no difference to me.

I adore Ronald Reagan for all he did for this country; however, I consider myself a Goldwater Conservative. Reagan took the Goldwater principles and added a very clever Will Rogers twist to it which made it accessible to the average American. Genius.

By the way, Una, I know I'm going to have problems reconciling my desire to see tighter controls on illegal immigration with the desire to elect free market candidates. Any chance those two issues will ever come into alignment with each other?

Dawn, you can have no alignment with lawlessness in a free market economy.

Club for Growth will always come down on the side of the rule of law and "fair" free trade.

Illegal aliens are law breakers that cannot be tolerated.

Just remember that a big government RINO politician cannot be deemed "pro-family" while favoring taxing and spending, while turning his blind side to law breakers who suck the life out of our welfare and health systems.

I hope this helps.

Dawn,
I'm anon from the first comment. I like your blog. I really didn't mean to attack the Club for Growth, but I did and I apologize. It's just that I take every opportunity to go after the US Chamber. FYI - I'm a successful entrepreneur who started his own business in 1989 and continue to run it today. SO, it looks like we're both guilty of jumping to judgement, huh? I'm painfully familiar with the tribulations of running a business including the IRS, local and state entities as well. The only "sitting on my back" that I do is when I afford myself the luxury of these discussions. In my business, if I "sit on my back" the money flow stops. Perhaps in another comment I'll fill you in on why I think the US Chamber is a shakedown protection racket employing strongarm scare tactics against businesses small and large. Best wishes to the Club for Growth as long as they distance themselves from the US Chamber.

Anon,

That's good.

You're exactly who we're looking for.

BTW, we ARE bipartisan; some of our largest donors are conservative pro growth Democrats and Independants; as well, we boast a huge lot of anti-big government libertarian type Republicans.

So, go to the Club for Growth web site join free of charge, pull up a chair at the table and join us.

We need guys like you.

Believe me you won't need to worry about the Chamber of Commerce, for in due time they will change or, be marginalized along with their socialist friends.

Thanks so much for your apology, Anon. GROUP HUG! ;-) Truly though, it is nice to know that both of us can admit a knee-jerk reaction and recover so nicely from it, isn't it?

By the way, that "sat on your back" comment was meant to paint the picture of Uncle Sam sitting on our backs while we struggled to run a business. I didn't mean it as in "sat on your rear and didn't do anything." It's soooo far from that when you run your own business! Frankly, that's part of the reason I was ready to get out. Not enough money and too many long hours. Oh, and vacation? What's that?!

It would seem that I have lots to learn about the Chamber of Commerce. When I was in a small business out in California, we never joined the CC. We joined the Better Business Burea and the NFIB only. I have absolutely no experience with the Chamber so now my curiousity is piqued!

Una, I'm really glad to see a state chapter of CfG here. It is absolutely time to take down the RINOs who've forgotten their roots!

As the Blog Turns...

Gee. I have found myself fascinated by the soap opera unfolding in the comments section of this blog since last night. One little mention on a controversial Democrat's blog and it's High Noon on ConservaChick! (Yes, I'm laughing while I type this.) For those of you who have no idea what's happening in the ever-expanding comments section , join the club! Here's what I know about Mark Nickolas from bits and pieces I've read on his blog, and from a local news report: Nickolas likes to sneer at Republicans and call them snide little nicknames as he provides his "Unfiltered and Candid Look at Politics, Politicians and the Media in Kentucky;" he raised a ruckus within the Democrat party here in Kentucky by filing a suit against the chairman of the party , Jerry Lundergan; and he will be appearing on the same panel with yours truly on Thursday night. That's about it. You now have the benefit of my not-so-extensive knowledge on this subject. Nickolas poste...

Friday Night with Hugh and Friends

The consummate Conservative host, Hugh Hewitt, and yours truly! Shameless of me to post this, I know; however, I'm too jazzed to care. :-p What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night! After an hour or so wandering through some of the exhibits at the Frazier Historical Arms Museum, I then got to spend three hours with Hugh Hewitt and 599 other fans of his show. I absolutely MUST say that not only was Hugh wonderful and the live show very entertaining, but his fans are absolutely the nicest people! I've seen other radio talk show s done live and mingled with fans of those shows. Hugh Hewitt's fans are the nicest, most down to earth, friendly people I've ever met. It's quite a credit to Hugh that he draws such a fan base. If you haven't been to the Frazier Historical Arms Museum here in Louisville, it's a must-see. The museum shows an amazing artistry with the exhibits and places them in the context of the times in a very entertaining and educationa...

Is conscription the prescription?

US Representative, Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is at it again. Rangel's prescription for fixing the ills we're feeling in Iraq is a draft . I have very mixed feelings about this. Conscription is conscription no matter what you choose to label it. Is that appropriate in a free country? On the flip side of this coin, I've often thought that compulsory national service would be a great idea for American kids right out of high school. It might have been a better start for me than learning to down beer at a Liberal Arts university! Two years in the service might give kids time to think about their future, learn higher levels of responsibility, and begin to take life more seriously. There are many countries who require some level of mandatory military service: Belarus, Chile, China, Croatia, Serbia, Russia, Iran, Lebanon, our neighbor Mexico, and our old buddy Germany, to name a few. Gee, now that I look at that partial list... aren't many of those countries Socialist or at battl...
