Free corn, anyone?

One day during chemistry lab at a large college, the professor noticed one young man (an exchange student) who kept rubbing his back, and stretching as if his back hurt. The professor asked the young man what was the matter.

The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, "Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke.
"You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.

When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat. Then you simply slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They become so used to it that they forget how to forage in the woods for themselves and accept their captivity."
The young man then told the professor that this is exactly what he sees happening to America.

The government keeps pushing its citizens toward socialism by spreading the free corn out in the form of government programs such as supplemental income tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drug programs, "free healthcare" proposals and more, all while Americans continue to slowly lose freedoms... just a little at a time.

Why should Americans have to forage for themselves in the forest when there's free corn to be had? Why? Well because there is no such thing as a free lunch. No politician can ever provide a service for you cheaper than you can procure it for yourself.

If you view all of this "free corn" as a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to send this secret to catching wild pigs on to your friends to warn them. If you think you are entitled to the "free corn" and it has become essential to your way of life, then God help you when the gate slams shut. God help us all.

In this important election year, listen closely to what the candidates are promising you. If you listen closely enough, you just might be able to tell who is about to slam the gate shut on your free-corn-eating arse and on the American way of life, on your independence and your freedom.

Thomas Jefferson said it best: "A government big enough to give you everything, is
big enough to take away everything you have." Amen to that, brother!

[A big thanks to Marvin for sending this my way via email. Isn't it nice to know our veterans are still watching out for us even after they've served in the military?]

The truthfulness of this story will become painfully apparent if the economy really does take a turn for the worse.

Whiner Nation isn't ready for hard times.

Whiner Nation??? Maybe you ought to ask Phil Gramm why people in the US are “whining”.

In 1999, Gramm successfully undid the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act, removing the decades-old “fire-wall” between commercial banking, which was heavily regulated, and investment banking, which was not.

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act did not extend significant new goverment regulation to investment banking.

And so… today, because of this piece of bad legislation that heavily favors the banking industry, we are left with what has become known as the “Housing Crisis”.

And what company employed Gramm after his tenure in congress? Why he became a lobbyist for UBS (Swiss Bank), of course!!!

If you listen very carefully, you can hear the banking community laughing at you for the gate has swung shut and you are already trapped inside.

We need MORE goverment regulation, not LESS!!!

Actually that quote isn't from Jefferson, it's from Gerald Ford.

Disillusioned with liberal GOP?? You must be living in an alternate universe.
Universal healthcare is needed here the US is the only industrialized nation without it.

Anonymous 8/19 11:36PM, it always amazes me how many different things people can read into the same story! I certainly saw the "free corn" story as a good lesson for people who believe that anything they are given is truly free.

And here, you've construed it to mean that by deregulating the people with the free corn, we have trapped ourselves?! Your premise is then that we are helpless to mitigate our own desire for free corn? We are slaves to the word "free?" Somehow government regulations can protect us from our wanton desire for freebies?

Deregulation puts the onus on the buyer to educate himself and to beware of something that seems too good to be true. That's as it should be. No matter how much the government tries to protect people from themselves, the responsibility for his well being still lies with each individual.

Anonymous 8/31 11:02AM, thanks for correcting my mistaken attribution on that quote. Indeed it was Ford who never seems to get credit for anything. ;o)

Michael, thanks for your concern; however, I can assure you that I'm living in a universe where reason still marginally rules. Only a Liberal would assume that because other industrialized nations are have universal healthcare, it is the right thing to do.

You dropped acid in college and never quite came back from the bad trip, huh? After all, the seniors at the frat house were doing it...

Friday Night with Hugh and Friends

The consummate Conservative host, Hugh Hewitt, and yours truly! Shameless of me to post this, I know; however, I'm too jazzed to care. :-p What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night! After an hour or so wandering through some of the exhibits at the Frazier Historical Arms Museum, I then got to spend three hours with Hugh Hewitt and 599 other fans of his show. I absolutely MUST say that not only was Hugh wonderful and the live show very entertaining, but his fans are absolutely the nicest people! I've seen other radio talk show s done live and mingled with fans of those shows. Hugh Hewitt's fans are the nicest, most down to earth, friendly people I've ever met. It's quite a credit to Hugh that he draws such a fan base. If you haven't been to the Frazier Historical Arms Museum here in Louisville, it's a must-see. The museum shows an amazing artistry with the exhibits and places them in the context of the times in a very entertaining and educationa

As the Blog Turns...

Gee. I have found myself fascinated by the soap opera unfolding in the comments section of this blog since last night. One little mention on a controversial Democrat's blog and it's High Noon on ConservaChick! (Yes, I'm laughing while I type this.) For those of you who have no idea what's happening in the ever-expanding comments section , join the club! Here's what I know about Mark Nickolas from bits and pieces I've read on his blog, and from a local news report: Nickolas likes to sneer at Republicans and call them snide little nicknames as he provides his "Unfiltered and Candid Look at Politics, Politicians and the Media in Kentucky;" he raised a ruckus within the Democrat party here in Kentucky by filing a suit against the chairman of the party , Jerry Lundergan; and he will be appearing on the same panel with yours truly on Thursday night. That's about it. You now have the benefit of my not-so-extensive knowledge on this subject. Nickolas poste
