As a person who's been on the "beat" and talking to the people from 2004 onward, I have often wondered when Conservative diverged from Republican. Then, on a random search for other things, I ran across this most intense analysis of that very thing. The author has nailed it down with just the title, "The Decline and Fall of American Conservatism."
Thank God for the Objectivists! ... errrr, I suppose that's not the correct way to express my gratitude but we can't all be Ayn Rand now, can we? ;o)
"The Founding Fathers created a free society grounded on the moral sovereignty of the individual. They recognized that the only legitimate function of government is to protect each individual’s right to act on his own judgment—so long as he does not violate the rights of others. Accordingly, the Founders established a government limited to the protection of individual rights—that is: limited to making and enforcing objective (i.e., rights-respecting) laws, to resolving civil disputes, to protecting private property, and to enforcing contracts."If you are a Liberal who truly wants to understand the difference between Conservative and Republican, this article is definitely required reading. If you're a Republican who doesn't understand why Conservatives often disagree with you, this is mandatory reading.
